Top 5 Ways to Exercise with Your Dog

Dogs generally make the best workout buddies. Why? They never bail out on you last-minute. They are eager to follow you everywhere and love spending time with you. Doing exercises and playful activities together also help deepen the bond.

There are valid reasons as to why exercise is a must. Over one-third of adults and 17% of children in the US are considered overweight as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention reports that 52.5% of dogs are either overweight or obese. Being overweight, be it in the case of humans or pets, can lead to a host of ailments and diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, and even cancer.

1. Take a Jog or Run
Though it is one of the most conventional methods of exercise, running is still perhaps the best exercise for you and your canine friend. Find a track or maybe a path at the park that welcomes dogs. Then put on your most comfortable running shoes and make it a part of your everyday routine to go jogging or running with your pet. It will be an excellent cardio workout for both of you. What’s more, you and your dog will get to enjoy the great outdoors while building up your fitness and stamina.

2. Go Hiking
One of the most fun and sight filled exercises with your dog is going on a hike. It’s best to start off with shorter, less intense hikes and gradually work your way up. Even if it may seem like simple walking, but with changes in elevation, hikes can often get strenuous. Since you are essentially on your own when on a hike, it’s good to be well-equipped. Make sure you carry a first-aid kit and attach an ID tag on your pet. Have collapsing bowls and bottles of water for your dog because hiking can get any dog or human thirsty.

3. Swim Away
When you have had a hard day at work and your dog is feeling exhausted as well, consider the high impact exercise of swimming. It stimulates the body and provides the much-needed release of energy. To make things more exciting in the backyard pool or at the lake, bring along a ball or some other floating object that your dog can swim and fetch. Swimming is a great way to combine exercise and playtime, making the experience a really enjoyable one!

4. Say Yes to Biking
Another way to exercise with your dog is to go biking. Similar to hiking, be prepared to first take your pet on a few trial walks to get him used to traveling alongside the bike. Begin by walking on the right side of the bike and keep the dog on the left. Then try riding the bike at a pace that suits both of you. Try stopping, turning, speeding up, and moving over for other vehicles and people.

5. Yoga
What better way to work out with your best friend that doing yoga? It tones the body, relieves stress, and increases blood circulation. Moreover, it helps build muscle and lose fat if you practice it on a regular basis. Dogs find a way to copy whatever you do, so don’t be surprised if your dog joins you in a downward dog position.

Exercise great for the body of course as well as the mind. Bringing your best friend will not only improve both of your fitness levels but it will bring fun and more bonding. Make exercise with your pet a habit.
