In the last few years, fresh dog food has become all the rage. Only a few years ago, it was rare to find fresh dog food available. However, there are now tons of fresh food companies out there now.
However, fresh dog food is usually quite expensive – at least more expensive than most other commercial dog foods. This extra cost can be worth it in many circumstances, though, for four main reasons.
Fresh food is typically available on a subscription basis. You subscribe to the food and the company sends it to you at regular intervals. Because of this, the company typically customizes your dog’s food based on their gender, breed, size, and activity level. In many cases, you will have to answer some questions before purchasing the food so that they can do this customization.
As you might imagine, it is impossible for a company to customize a bag of kibble like this. In these cases, you have to measure out how much food your dog needs and possibly adjust the amount yourself. This can be difficult and is often not very accurate.
Because fresh food is often customizable, it is often better for your dog. After all, it is specifically made for their needs. Plus, it also takes some of the weight off of your shoulders.
- Better Ingredients
When you look at fresh food, you can literally see all the ingredients in it. If it is low in meat, you will be able to tell without even looking on the ingredient list. If the meat is low quality, you may be able to tell as well.
Because of this, many fresh dog foods use quality ingredients. You can tell what each piece of potato is and how many carrots the formula contains. If the recipe seems to contain only potatoes, you probably wouldn’t buy it for your pooch again. Companies know this and keep it in mind when designing their recipes.
On the other hand, this is not true of kibble and wet food. You can’t really tell how much of what ingredients are in a piece of kibble just by looking at it. Therefore, these companies can easily get away with using lower-quality meats and packing their food full of wheat.
- Fewer Additives
Fresh dog food is usually meant to stay frozen, which means that it doesn’t need to be “shelf-stable”. This lowers the number of additives the food needs, which also means that your pooch is consuming fewer additives. While not additives are bad, some of them have been linked to health problems.
Plus, our dogs just don’t need additives, so it is best to avoid them if you can.
Because these foods are fresh, they also don’t need to contain things like artificial colors or flavors. They look and taste just fine how they are. Once again, while not all artificial colors and flavors are harmful, they aren’t necessarily good for our dogs either.
- Healthier Skin and Coat
While there have been few studies comparing types of dog food, many owners claim that fresh food directly impacts how much their dog sheds and the condition of their skin. This may be because fresh dog food is missing many of the additives that may cause rashes and other skin problems.
Alternatively, it could be that fresh food typically contains better ingredients. Dogs are what they eat, so it only makes sense that they would react well to higher quality food.

More are being founded all the time and there are some scientific reviews too to compare.
When you can afford it, there are many benefits to choosing fresh dog food. From healthier skin to customization options, many of these benefits can help your pooch live a longer and healthier life.
